Google has unveiled a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills training initiative designed to boost the capacity of Nigerian public servants and enhance digital governance in the country.
The programme, announced on Thursday in Abuja, is part of Google’s collaboration with Apolitical and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The initiative, known as the Apolitical Government AI Campus, aims to equip government officials with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate AI into public service delivery. The training will cover areas such as AI fundamentals, ethical leadership in AI adoption, and practical applications of the technology in governance.
Speaking during the launch, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said the training will help civil servants better understand how AI can drive national development. According to him, this initiative will ensure that public servants are not left behind in the global AI revolution. It will enhance efficiency, improve decision-making, and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Google’s Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, said the company remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s digital growth through education and innovation. He explained that the programme reflects Google’s belief in empowering people who shape the nation’s future. By training public servants on AI, we are building a government workforce that is data-driven, agile, and prepared for the future, he said.
Chris Ferguson, Vice President at Apolitical, highlighted the importance of structured AI training for the public sector, noting that effective implementation requires both technical understanding and ethical consideration. He added that the Government AI Campus will serve as a global example of how governments can responsibly adopt emerging technologies.
The training will be delivered through an online platform featuring interactive learning modules, case studies, and expert sessions. It is expected to reach hundreds of civil servants across different ministries, departments, and agencies in Nigeria, strengthening the country’s capacity to use AI for national progress.
