Gov Otti Says He Has Activated Steps To Secure Nnamdi Kanu Release

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that he has already activated specific steps aimed at securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the Indigenous People of Biafra leader who was recently convicted.

Kanu received a life imprisonment sentence from Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court Abuja on November 20, a judgment that has continued to attract wide public interest across the country.

Governor Otti explained that the plan to work towards Kanu’s freedom did not begin after the conviction but was initiated while the trial was still ongoing. He noted that the discussions and groundwork for the strategy were agreed upon earlier and remained active even before the final ruling was delivered by the court.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Otti reassured the public that the steps being taken are still in motion. He said that while Nnamdi Kanu retains his constitutional right to appeal the conviction, the government of Abia State has already begun implementing measures that were previously agreed upon. According to him, these steps will continue until the objective of securing Kanu’s release is achieved.

The governor also disclosed that during a visit to Kanu in the custody of the Department of State Services in Abuja, he communicated certain agreements that had been reached with what he described as the highest authorities in the country. He said those discussions form the backbone of the current strategy being executed in pursuit of Kanu’s freedom.

Otti noted that his engagements with national authorities were important in ensuring that the process followed the right channels. He added that the goal was not only to push for the release of Kanu but also to maintain peace and stability in the state and the wider South East region.

He concluded by calling for calm among residents, urging the public to allow the ongoing process to unfold without tension. The governor maintained that his administration remains fully committed to ensuring that the matter is resolved through dialogue, lawful procedures and constructive engagement at all levels.
