Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed the receipt of the Olubadan-in-Council’s recommendation of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan.
Governor Makinde assured that due process was adhered to during the selection process and announced that Oba Olakulehin would be enthroned once he is in good health.
Governor Makinde made this announcement on Saturday during the final burial ceremony of the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Oke-Ado, Ibadan. The event was attended by traditional rulers, title holders, religious leaders, top government officials, family members, and numerous other guests.
Despite heavy rain midway through the event, a large number of Ibadan residents and guests gathered to honor the late monarch. Governor Makinde humorously attributed the rain to those opposed to the celebration, which drew laughter from the audience. He encouraged family members and residents to take pride in the late Olubadan’s fulfilled and impactful life.
Reflecting on the achievements of the late Olubadan and his administration, Makinde highlighted the amendment of the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration Laws. He noted that this significant change, made on May 26, 2023, now allows the governor to amend the Declaration of Obas without needing approval from the Council of Chiefs. This new law will be used to enthrone Oba Olakulehin.
Governor Makinde expressed his gratitude to everyone present and reiterated that the late Olubadan lived a fulfilled and eventful life. He concluded by stating that the enthronement of Oba Olakulehin would proceed once he is strong enough, marking a new chapter for the Ibadan traditional institution.
