Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has revealed that N4.4 billion has been deposited into a relief account to support victims of the Maiduguri flood disaster.
This is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the devastating floods.
The state had earlier established a dedicated relief account to facilitate donations, with pledges totaling N13.2 billion. However, as of Sunday, the government had received N4,441,494,902.81 in actual contributions.
Governor Zulum made the announcement during the inauguration of a 35-member Relief Disbursement Committee in Maiduguri on Monday. He emphasised the importance of transparency in the disbursement process, urging committee members to perform their duties with integrity and accountability.
“We must be accountable for every resource entrusted to us,” Zulum said, stressing that the relief funds should be effectively utilised to ensure they reach those most in need. He added that all transactions related to the account will be made public.
The governor also announced that committee members’ allowances would be covered by the Borno State Government, ensuring that 100% of donations go directly to flood victims.
In addition to financial aid, Zulum pledged that the state government would rehabilitate public infrastructure damaged by the floods, including hospitals, roads, and bridges.
Sympathisers from across the country continue to visit Borno State to express their support, with many making pledges to assist the flood victims.
