Haaland Scores On Return As Manchester City Edge Spurs

Haaland Scores On Return As Manchester City Edge Spurs.

Erling Haaland marked his return to action with a goal as Manchester City secured a vital 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, boosting their hopes of a top-four finish.

City took the lead in the 12th minute when Jeremy Doku’s low cross found Haaland unmarked, and the Norwegian striker calmly slotted a first-time finish into the bottom corner. The visitors continued to dominate, with Savinho missing a golden opportunity to double their lead after being set up by the lively Doku.

Tottenham struggled to create chances in the first half, with their first real test for Ederson coming just before the break when he tipped a Kevin Danso header over the bar. City almost capitalised on the resulting counterattack, but Matheus Nunes’ pass to Omar Marmoush was overhit, denying the Egyptian a simple tap-in.

The second half saw Spurs grow into the game, forcing Ederson into action as he kept out Wilson Odobert’s deflected shot and later denied Son Heung-min an equaliser. Mathys Tel and Pape Sarr both missed key chances for the hosts, with the latter slicing wide from a dangerous cut-back.

Haaland thought he had sealed the win with a second goal in stoppage time after bundling past two defenders, but referee Jarred Gillett ruled that he handled the ball. A VAR review deemed the evidence inconclusive, and the on-field decision stood. Spurs almost made City pay moments later, but Sarr headed over from their final chance of the match.

The victory moves City up to fourth in the Premier League table, while Tottenham remain in 13th place.

City Show Signs of Improvement

Manchester City’s recent performances have shown progress, and their first-half display in North London was one of their most controlled in months. Pep Guardiola’s side dictated the tempo, balancing quick attacking play with patient possession.

Winter signing Nico Gonzalez played an advanced midfield role alongside Mateo Kovacic, while Nunes operated as an inverted full-back to cover for Rodri’s absence—one of Guardiola’s most effective tactical tweaks this season.

City’s left flank proved especially dangerous, with Doku, Gonzalez, and Josko Gvardiol linking well to create openings. However, their finishing let them down, allowing Spurs to stay in the contest.

Despite Tottenham’s second-half pressure, City showed resilience in defence, with Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov standing firm. Ederson also played a crucial role with key saves to secure the three points.

City’s lack of clinical finishing could have cost them on another night, but their defensive solidity ensured they held on for a crucial win.
