Hervé Renard Opens Up On Turning Down Nigeria’s Coaching Offer.
French football manager Hervé Renard recently revealed that he came close to accepting a coaching role with Nigeria’s national football team. In an interview with L’Equipe, Renard explained that he carefully considered the pros and cons of the offer for several weeks before ultimately deciding to turn it down.
“I almost went to Nigeria,” Renard said. “I weighed up the pros and cons for a few days, even a few weeks before refusing. It is the best offer I’ve had so far, the rest didn’t suit me.”
Renard’s impressive coaching career has seen him achieve remarkable success, particularly on the African continent. He is the only coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two different countries. He first tasted continental glory with Zambia in 2012, guiding the underdogs to a memorable victory. Just three years later, in 2015, Renard led the Ivory Coast to their second AFCON title, solidifying his reputation as a top tactician in African football.
Beyond Africa, Renard has managed several other teams, including Saudi Arabia, whom he led to a stunning 2-1 win over Argentina in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. And most recently managed France women’s national team. His impressive tactical approach and ability to inspire underdog teams have earned him international recognition.
Despite receiving the tempting offer from Nigeria, Renard decided to pursue other options, believing that the role wasn’t the right fit for him at this stage of his career. His decision leaves Nigerian football fans wondering what might have been, as they continue their search for a manager capable of leading the Super Eagles back to glory.
