House Republicans have turned their attention to Special Counsel Jack Smith, who currently leads high-profile criminal cases against former U.S. President Donald Trump. Smith’s case against Trump over alleged election interference is now on hold, as he assesses the future of this prosecution. Trump’s anticipated return to the presidency would put him in control of the Department of Justice, which supervises Smith’s office. In light of this, Smith is reportedly considering halting this prosecution and another case related to alleged mishandling of classified documents, aiming to conclude both investigations by Inauguration Day.
In a new development, House Republicans are demanding transparency around Smith’s investigations. The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan, along with Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Barry Loudermilk, sent a letter to Smith, calling for his office to preserve all relevant records. The letter requests documentation, communications, electronic data, and metadata pertaining to both Trump-related cases, with a deadline of 22 November.
“With President Trump’s decisive victory this week, we are concerned that the Office of Special Counsel may attempt to purge relevant records, communications, and documents,” Jordan and Loudermilk stated in their letter. Their appeal underscores concerns among Trump’s allies, who believe that Smith’s investigations were unwarranted.
If Smith fails to comply with this request, House Republicans loyal to Trump may intensify their efforts, with the potential for a subpoena to compel Smith’s testimony. This would set the stage for a high-profile inquiry into Smith’s handling of the cases as the former president prepares to assume office once more.
