Hugo Duro’s Late Header Stuns Real Madrid As Valencia Secure Historic Victory

Hugo Duro’s Late Header Stuns Real Madrid As Valencia Secure Historic Victory.

Valencia dealt a major blow to Real Madrid’s La Liga title hopes with a dramatic injury-time winner from Hugo Duro, earning a 2-1 victory at the Bernabéu – their first at the stadium since 2008.

The match reached boiling point in the 95th minute when substitute Rafa Mir delivered a perfectly measured cross, which Duro nodded home from close range, leaving Madrid stunned and the home crowd silenced.

Valencia had taken the lead in the first half through Mouctar Diakhaby, who outjumped his marker to head in André Almeida’s pinpoint delivery. Real Madrid had the opportunity to draw level before the break when Kylian Mbappé was brought down in the box by César Tárrega, only for Vinícius Júnior’s tame penalty to be comfortably saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Vinícius redeemed himself shortly after the restart, firing a powerful strike into the roof of the net to bring Madrid back into the contest. However, despite several chances, including a near miss from Mbappé, Los Blancos failed to capitalise and were ultimately punished by Duro’s late intervention.

The defeat means Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain three points behind league leaders Barcelona, who were set to face Real Betis later on Saturday evening. The result also highlights Madrid’s penalty woes this season, with five spot-kicks missed across all competitions – the club’s highest tally of failures since the 2013-14 campaign.

There was also a historic moment for young goalkeeper Fran González, who at 19 became the youngest Madrid shot-stopper to make his La Liga debut since Iker Casillas in 1999, stepping in with Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin both sidelined by injury.

Real Madrid must now regroup quickly as they prepare to travel to London for a high-stakes Champions League quarter-final first leg against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.
