Allegations of Police Intimidation Emerge In Dele Farotimi Case.
Reports have emerged detailing allegations by activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, that the Nigeria Police Force is acting on a petition filed against him by renowned legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN.
According to sources close to Farotimi, he disclosed during a conversation over the weekend that the petition accuses him of defamation of character. The allegations are reportedly linked to his recently published book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which recounts his personal encounters with Nigeria’s judicial system. The book includes narratives of a past legal case involving the Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Farotimi alleged that the petition has sparked attempts by high-ranking individuals in government to target him. He claimed these efforts go beyond legal boundaries, raising concerns about the misuse of police authority.
Sources further revealed that Farotimi’s immediate family has been unable to establish contact with him, and his current whereabouts remain unknown. His supporters have since urged the Nigeria Police Force to allow him access to his family and legal counsel.
Critics have condemned the use of state resources to settle personal grievances. “The use of the police to pursue private interests is unacceptable. The police are meant to serve public interest, not private vendettas,” a source stated.
Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, is yet to comment on the matter, and the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement. Meanwhile, calls for Farotimi’s release and transparency in the case continue to grow.
