Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai has called for a change in medical protocols following a serious injury sustained by the team’s striker, Barnabás Varga, during their match against Scotland on Sunday at Euro 2024.
The incident occurred when the 29-year-old striker suffered a severe collision, prompting immediate concern from his teammates. They signalled urgently for medical assistance, and upon its arrival, sheets were raised around Varga as he received on-field treatment.
Television cameras captured Szoboszlai visibly distressed, seemingly in tears and concerned about the speed at which the stretcher was brought onto the pitch. In a bid to expedite the process, Szoboszlai assisted in running with the stretcher to ensure Varga received prompt medical attention.
Addressing the incident, Szoboszlai stated, “It’s not my decision but I think we need to change something. Even if somebody is on the ground, and you see that it was a big crash then just go [onto the pitch]. Even if the referee is saying don’t go on, just go on. And if you see it’s nothing serious, then you can just go down and it’s finished. But seconds can help a lot.”
Varga is currently in a stable condition at a nearby hospital, having suffered a concussion and a broken cheekbone which required surgery. His recovery is being closely monitored, and the incident has sparked discussions about the necessity for faster medical response times in football.
Szoboszlai’s call for a change highlights the critical importance of immediate medical intervention during serious injuries, with the hope that future protocols will prioritise player safety and ensure swift action is taken when needed.
