Ibadan Airport Resumes Flight Operations After Modernization

The Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, has resumed operations after a five month closure for an upgrade to international standards.

The airport received its first flight on Wednesday, with an aircraft from the presidency landing safely at 9:14 am.

This development comes ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Ibadan on Friday for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. Governor Seyi Makinde had launched the airport upgrade project in September 2024, describing it as a key infrastructure to connect Oyo State to global markets and strengthen its economy.

“The upgrade of the airport is expected to enhance air travel operations and provide a reliable transportation network for both business and leisure travelers, positioning the state for economic growth and development,” Governor Makinde said. The modernization project included a refurbished VIP lounge, a new fire truck, and the installation of a 500,000 litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility.

The successful landing of the first aircraft demonstrates the airport’s readiness to handle high profile flights safely and efficiently. According to Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Makinde, “With the presidential flight scheduled to follow soon, this inaugural flight since March sets a positive precedent for future arrivals and departures.”

The airport’s resumption of operations is expected to reinforce Ibadan’s standing as a strategic aviation hub and economic gateway in Nigeria. Officials say the development will boost the state’s connectivity to global markets while improving regional air travel.

With the airport now operational, President Tinubu’s visit on Friday will mark a significant milestone in the airport’s upgraded operations. The coronation ceremony for the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland will bring together prominent dignitaries and stakeholders from across the state and country.
