ICPC Recovers ₦13 Billion In Diverted Public Funds, Announces New Strategic Plan

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced the recovery of over ₦13 billion in diverted public funds during September 2024.

The Chairman of the Commission, Adamu Aliyu, made this disclosure while launching the ICPC’s 2024-2028 strategic action plan in Abuja on Tuesday.

Aliyu did not specify the individuals or sectors involved but emphasised that the ICPC has been working tirelessly to fulfil its mandate.

“Over the past year, the ICPC has made significant progress in discharging its mandate. For example, we recovered over ₦13 billion in diverted public funds in September 2024 alone,” Aliyu stated.

As part of the new strategic plan, Aliyu announced that the ICPC would digitalise its operations to enhance efficiency in investigations and case management. This transformation, he said, would help the agency stay ahead in the fight against corruption in the digital age.

“We are also embarking on ICT reforms that will digitalise our operations, enabling more efficient investigations and internal processes,” he added.

The chairman also revealed the development of a specialised curriculum to strengthen the enforcement capacity of ICPC personnel. Additionally, Aliyu highlighted plans to decentralise anti-corruption efforts by empowering state governments, particularly through their Attorneys General, to prevent corruption at the local level.

“The mobilisation of State Attorneys General will ensure that state governments are better equipped to combat corruption effectively,” he noted.

Speaking at the event, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to fighting corruption, a central focus of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The fight against corruption remains a cornerstone of this administration’s agenda. Corruption weakens institutions and hampers national progress,” Fagbemi said.

Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, also pledged the judiciary’s support for the ICPC’s new action plan, emphasising the importance of collaboration in combating corruption.
