IGP Visits Benue, Deploys Additional Forces To Tackle Violence.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Benue State and ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical units to address the recent surge in violent attacks that have claimed numerous lives.

The Nigeria Police Force announced this development in a statement posted on Monday via its official X account, stating: “IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.” This decisive action follows a series of deadly incidents in the state, which have heightened concerns over security.

Reports indicate that at least 100 people were killed in a recent attack by gunmen on a village in Benue’s central region. Amnesty International Nigeria highlighted the incident, pointing to a disturbing rise in violence. This unrest is part of an ongoing conflict between nomadic herders and settled farmers, driven by competition over land and resources—a situation worsened by climate change and population growth.

The IGP’s visit and the reinforcement of tactical teams aim to restore calm and ensure the safety of residents. These units are tasked with preventing further attacks and apprehending those responsible. The response is part of a broader effort involving multiple security agencies, including the military, which has also deployed forces to the region.

Local leaders and human rights organisations have urged swift intervention to curb the violence. The Red Cross has similarly reported multiple attacks in Benue, underscoring the scale of the crisis and the urgent need for action.

Beyond the immediate loss of life, the violence has disrupted farming in Benue, a state often referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation” due to its vital role in agricultural production. This disruption threatens food security both locally and across Nigeria.

In summary, the IGP’s arrival in Benue and the deployment of additional tactical teams mark a significant step towards addressing the region’s security challenges. However, lasting peace will require tackling the root causes, including land disputes, resource scarcity, and ethnic tensions.

This article provides a clear, factual account of the Inspector General of Police’s actions in Benue, enriched with context about the violence and its broader implications, all presented in British English as requested.
