Insecurity: Police Step Up Surveillance In Lagos Schools, Worship Centres

The Lagos State Police Command has increased security presence across schools, worship centres and major public spaces as part of efforts to prevent possible threats during the festive period and into the New Year.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh disclosed this while addressing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja, noting that the move was aimed at reinforcing public confidence.

Jimoh assured residents that Lagos remains safe, stressing that additional personnel had been strategically deployed to areas frequently visited by the public. He said the measure was taken to ensure the safety of worshippers and visitors across the state. According to him, “We want the general public to know that Lagos is safe and secure. We have made additional deployments to all schools, places of worship and other locations frequently visited by people.”

The commissioner explained that the deployment would continue into the New Year to maintain high levels of security across Lagos. He emphasised that there was “no cause for alarm”, adding that the command was strengthening its tactical units across all local government areas to ensure swift response to any threats.

The heightened vigilance follows recent incidents of abductions in states such as Kwara, Kebbi and Niger, which have raised public concern. Jimoh said the Lagos Command was determined to prevent such incidents within the state, assuring residents of continuous monitoring and intelligence gathering.

During the briefing, the commissioner also warned residents about an emerging trend involving vehicle theft by newly hired drivers and car wash attendants. He revealed that the command had recovered 10 exotic vehicles and arrested 56 suspects linked to crimes such as robbery and car theft. “These vehicles are mostly those taken away by drivers who were just employed,” he said, adding that some attendants at car wash centres had also fled with customers’ cars.

Jimoh urged Lagosians to take personal security more seriously by avoiding leaving their car keys with strangers or recently engaged workers. He reaffirmed the command’s dedication to maintaining a secure environment, assuring that Lagos would remain “safe and secure” throughout the festive season and beyond.
