Ambassador Jessye Lapenn, Senior Coordinator for Atlantic Cooperation, presided over the first virtual meeting of senior representatives from 31 member countries of the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation on November 29. Launched on September 18, the partnership aims to foster collective problem-solving and uphold shared principles for Atlantic cooperation.
All member nations have endorsed the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation, signifying a collective commitment to a peaceful, prosperous, open, and cooperative Atlantic region. Additionally, the declaration emphasizes the protection of the ocean as a healthy, sustainable, and resilient resource for future generations.
During the virtual meeting, members built on the Plan of Action adopted in September, reaching agreements on collaborative efforts in marine spatial planning and the promotion of scientific and research exchange. Several nations expressed interest in exploring the Atlantic Ocean’s potential contributions to food security, addressing Sargassum inundation, and tackling marine plastic pollution.
The Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation is set to further scientific collaboration by facilitating information sharing and building capacity.
The meeting also welcomed new members, bringing the total number of participating countries to 35, representing the north, south, east, and west coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. The gathering marks a significant step in strengthening diplomatic and cooperative ties among member nations.
