International Community Applauds Progress In Ending Sudan Conflict At IGAD Summit

Sudan (Sudanese flag) on the map of Africa. The map is in soft grunge and vintage style, like watercolor painting on old paper.

In a significant diplomatic development, the United States has praised the leadership of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in collaboration with the African Union and other global and regional partners, for its efforts to bring an immediate halt to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was emphasized during the 41st Extraordinary Summit of IGAD Heads of States and Government, held from December 9 in Djibouti.

Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, in a press statement, expressed gratitude to President of Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh for extending the invitation to participate in the summit dedicated to resolving the Sudan conflict.

The United States welcomed the announced commitments by SAF General Burhan and RSF General Hemedti to an unconditional ceasefire and a one-to-one meeting.

Urging prompt adherence to these commitments, the U.S. emphasized the need for both parties to engage in talks without delay, emphasizing the absence of a military solution deemed acceptable.

The condemnation by IGAD of external support to the warring factions was strongly endorsed by the United States, emphasizing its role in perpetuating the conflict.

Deep concern was shared by both the U.S. and IGAD over the impact of the conflict on women and children, with a specific emphasis on conflict-related sexual violence.

The United States pledged its commitment to closely coordinate with IGAD, the African Union, and other partners to facilitate an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and led civilian dialogue.

The objective is to address transitional and governance issues, ultimately resuming Sudan’s democratic transition.

The United States affirmed its unwavering support for the collaborative efforts of IGAD and the African Union in resolving the Sudan crisis, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
