Iranian Authorities Continue Efforts To Identify Victims Of Deadly Port Explosion.
Iranian officials are working to identify 22 of the 70 victims confirmed dead following last week’s deadly explosion at the Shahid Rajaee port, according to the provincial governor speaking to state news agency IRNA on Monday. The blast, which left nearly 1,200 people injured, has shocked the nation and prompted a swift governmental response. Around 120 individuals remain hospitalised, state media reported.
Located in southern Iran along the Strait of Hormuz, the Shahid Rajaee port is a critical hub, handling 85 percent of the country’s shipping container traffic in the past year. The port’s strategic location at the junction of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman makes it one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes for oil and gas.
Although the port has previously been the target of foreign cyberattacks — most notably a 2020 operation attributed to Israel — officials have not linked last week’s explosion to any external aggression. Both Israeli and Iranian authorities have refrained from commenting on whether the blast was caused by an attack.
During a televised interview on Monday, Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s security and foreign policy committee, avoided speculating on the possibility of sabotage or intentional wrongdoing. He also declined to address questions regarding whether the importer involved may have submitted false documentation to reduce costs.
The parliamentary committee issued a statement pledging to release the results of its investigation “as soon as possible,” signalling a commitment to transparency as the nation continues to mourn the victims and assess the cause of the tragic incident.
