Israel Launches Airstrike In Yemen Targeting Senior Houthi Military Official

Israel Launches Airstrike In Yemen Targeting Senior Houthi Military Official.

Israel conducted a targeted airstrike in Yemen overnight on Saturday, aiming to eliminate a senior military official of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, according to an Israeli military source. The strike, which took place amidst heightened regional tensions, marks a bold escalation in Israel’s efforts to counter Iran’s influence through its proxies in the Middle East.

The operation reportedly focused on Muhammad Abd al-Karim al-Ghamari, the Houthi military chief of staff, who is believed to play a key role in coordinating the group’s missile programme and its ties with Iran. The Israeli Air Force struck a Houthi command headquarters in Yemen, with an official stating, “We will soon know if it succeeded.” The outcome of the strike, including whether al-Ghamari was killed, remains unconfirmed at this time.

The attack coincided with Israel’s ongoing military operations against Iran, including strikes on nuclear enrichment sites and military bases, as reported by The New York Times. The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have been a significant player in Iran’s regional network, frequently launching missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia and, more recently, targeting Israeli interests in solidarity with Palestinian groups.

The Houthi leadership has not officially commented on the strike, but regional sources indicate heightened alert levels in Sanaa. The attack has further disrupted Yemen’s already fragile security situation, with potential implications for civilian safety and regional stability. Neighbouring countries, including Oman, have expressed concern, with reports suggesting Oman may offer mediation to de-escalate tensions.

International reactions remain cautious. The United States, a key ally of Israel, has not publicly endorsed the strike, though some posts on X suggest Washington may be urging restraint to prevent a wider conflict. The strike’s timing, during a period of intense Israel-Iran hostilities, has raised fears of retaliatory actions by the Houthis or other Iranian-backed groups.
