The Israeli government has revealed plans for an extended military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The operation is expected to last for another six to eight weeks, with the goal of significantly damaging Hamas’ remaining capabilities in the area.
According to Israeli military officials, the operation will involve targeted airstrikes, ground assaults, and special forces operations aimed at dismantling Hamas fighters, command centers, and tunnels in Rafah.
Despite international criticism and concerns about civilian casualties, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stressed that “extraordinary measures” would be taken to avoid harming civilians during the operation.
The decision to target Rafah comes as Hamas continues to launch attacks from the enclave, triggering a deadly cycle of violence that has left thousands dead and displaced millions more. With over a million Palestinian civilians trapped in Rafah, world leaders fear a humanitarian catastrophe if a full-scale ground invasion occurs.
In response to these concerns, U.S. President Joe Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the safety of civilians and to pursue alternative solutions to the conflict. However, Netanyahu remains steadfast in his commitment to achieving “complete victory” over Hamas.
Meanwhile, Hamas officials have vowed to continue fighting, despite suffering significant losses during the conflict. With thousands of fighters reportedly killed and much of Gaza reduced to rubble, Hamas remains defiant, prepared for a long war in Rafah and beyond.
As preparations for the military operation intensify, concerns mount over the fate of civilians caught in the crossfire. While Israel has pledged to allow civilians to evacuate the area, logistical challenges remain, with limited options for relocation and access to essential services.
