Israel To Discuss 60-Day Ceasefire Deal With Hezbollah In Cabinet Meeting.
Israel’s cabinet is set to convene on Tuesday to discuss a proposed 60-day ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, following nearly two months of intense military action. The ongoing conflict, sparked by a year of rocket attacks from Hezbollah, led Israeli troops to launch a land invasion of Lebanon in a bid to secure its northern border.
Reports suggest that the ceasefire agreement would involve a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, while Hezbollah would retreat from areas near the Israeli border, marking a significant de-escalation of hostilities. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is believed to have agreed to the deal “in principle,” with discussions expected to finalise the terms.
Despite the discussions, Israeli forces continued to target Hezbollah positions overnight, particularly along the Syria-Lebanon border. Lebanese authorities have reported that at least 31 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes on Monday. Additionally, Israel’s northern regions were targeted by at least 10 rockets fired from Lebanon, resulting in two people being wounded.
The proposed ceasefire is seen as a step towards stabilising the region, with both sides showing signs of exhaustion from the ongoing conflict. As the Israeli cabinet prepares to discuss the deal, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the hostilities that have claimed numerous lives on both sides.
