Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has visited Pope Francis in hospital following his diagnosis with pneumonia in both lungs. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday after experiencing a respiratory infection.
After her visit, Meloni expressed relief at finding the Pope in good spirits. “I was very happy to have found him alert and responsive. We joked as always. He hasn’t lost his proverbial sense of humour,” she said in a statement. She also conveyed her best wishes for his recovery on behalf of the Italian government and the nation.
The Vatican had earlier described the Pope’s condition as a “complex clinical situation” following medical tests and a chest X-ray. Pneumonia, a serious lung infection, can lead to breathing difficulties and chest pain, posing a significant risk for elderly patients.
Despite his illness, the Vatican reported that Pope Francis remains alert, has been able to eat breakfast, and is even managing some work from his hospital bed. A Vatican official confirmed that he has been able to sit up in an armchair, although he has cancelled a scheduled papal audience for Saturday and will not be able to attend Mass on Sunday.
