As Nigeria commemorates International Women’s Day 2024, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has voiced out his desire for a female president to lead the nation. Speaking at the PDP International Women’s Day celebration in Abuja, Damagum stated the need for gender equality and noted the failures of men in current Nigerian leadership.
During the event, attended by PDP officials and women leaders, Damagum, represented by the PDP National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, mentioned the crucial role of women in society. He expressed his hope that, even if not in their generation, a woman would one day ascend to the presidency, citing the shortcomings of male leadership.
“The significance of mothers and the role of women cannot be overstated,” Damagum said. “I believe that the men have failed this generation.”
The PDP’s sub-theme for the International Women’s Day celebration, “Empowering Women and Girls for Political Leadership,” echoes the global efforts to increase female representation in politics.
Amina Divine Arong, the PDP National Woman Leader, also stated the importance of gender equality in political participation and leadership.She stated the advantages of having women in leadership roles, due to their ability to navigate challenges effectively, and stressed on the need for women to be inspired, trained, and supported in their pursuit of leadership positions.
“We must end discrimination against working mothers and break down maternal walls,” Arong asserted. “Young women and girls must be groomed and encouraged, not maligned and shut out of the political space.”
