JAMB Urges Candidates To Shun Superstition After UTME Incident
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has called on candidates to avoid superstitious beliefs that could hinder their academic success, following an unusual incident during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
In a statement issued on Saturday, JAMB’s Public Communication Advisor, Dr Fabian Benjamin, revealed that a female candidate refused to answer any examination questions, citing instructions from her grandfather to await ‘miraculous intervention’ rather than attempting the test.
Although the incident, which occurred on Saturday, 26th April, was confirmed by JAMB, the examination body did not disclose the candidate’s name, her state of origin, or the Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre where it took place.
“On a lighter note, another dimension of gullibility was exhibited by a female UTME candidate who refused to attempt any question when she sat for the examination this morning because she was complying with the instruction of her grandfather to do nothing at the examination but wait for miraculous intervention,” Benjamin explained.
He added, “Of course, such miracles do not happen with JAMB.”
Dr Benjamin further advised all candidates to rely on thorough preparation rather than superstitious beliefs, stressing that success in examinations can only be achieved through hard work and dedication.
The incident highlights the potential negative impact of superstition on educational progress and underscores the importance of promoting diligent study habits among students.
