In Abuja yesterday, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, unveiled how influential politicians compromise security and manipulate voter registration processes.
Speaking at a policy roundtable organized by Yiaga Africa, themed ‘Improving the Integrity of Nigeria’s Voter Register,’ Jega highlighted the challenges associated with registration of underage persons and foreigners.
Jega acknowledged that while the extent of registration irregularities is sometimes exaggerated and politicized, it remains a significant issue.
He pointed to manipulation of the registration exercise, corruption, and what he termed ‘community connivance’ as contributing factors. Notably, Jega cited instances where politicians orchestrated illegal activities during registration, influencing security and registration officials while residents turned a blind eye.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Jega noted that multiple registrants manage to cast votes in polling units, emphasizing the need for vigilance, effective policing, arrests, and enhanced civic education to counteract this trend.
Proposing solutions, Jega emphasized the importance of well-trained and resolute registration officials capable of resisting inducement and threats from politicians. His insights shed light on the complex dynamics influencing voter registration integrity, sparking discussions on potential reforms in the electoral process.
