The African Democratic Congress has strongly criticised United States President Donald Trump for issuing a threat of possible military action against Nigeria.
The party described the comments as provocative and an attack on the country’s sovereignty, insisting that no foreign power has the right to interfere in Nigeria’s internal security matters.
In a statement issued on Monday, the ADC said the remark attributed to Trump was “unacceptable and insensitive to Nigeria’s sovereignty.” The party stressed that the country is facing security challenges, but inviting foreign military intervention would worsen the situation rather than help. According to the statement, “Nigeria has security challenges, but inviting foreign powers for military intervention is not the solution. It threatens our unity and sovereignty.”
The party accused the former US President of exploiting Nigeria’s security issues for political gains and warned that such comments could incite diplomatic tension. It maintained that Nigeria must protect its image on the global stage and avoid being used as a subject of political statements by foreign leaders. The ADC noted that Trump’s threat could undermine Nigeria’s global reputation and create unnecessary strain in international relations.
The ADC also called out the Federal Government for the way it has managed the nation’s security, saying that weak leadership has allowed room for foreign interference. It stated that the government must respond firmly and show that Nigeria is capable of solving its internal challenges without external pressure. The statement added that the government should “strengthen diplomacy, security reforms, and national unity to ensure no foreign nation feels entitled to make such threats.”
The party emphasised that Nigeria must take ownership of its security reforms and ensure its institutions are empowered to restore peace. It argued that military intervention from a foreign country would be counterproductive and could destabilise the nation further. The ADC urged citizens and political leaders to unite and avoid politicising national security issues, especially on international platforms.
The ADC advised the Tinubu administration to enhance international relations through dialogue and diplomacy rather than allow foreign threats to dominate discussions. It warned that foreign military involvement in Nigeria would create more problems and threaten democratic progress. The party concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and defend the country’s sovereignty, saying national interest must always be the priority.
