The Accord Party has highlighted that the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, represents a pivotal test for the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan.
The party stressed that the election must be conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a statement issued on October 24, 2025, the party congratulated Professor Amupitan on his appointment, citing his vast experience as a legal scholar, accomplished academic, and seasoned administrator. Accord Party expressed optimism that his leadership would introduce the necessary reforms to strengthen INEC’s operations.
The party also cautioned that the upcoming Anambra election would be the first significant assessment of Amupitan’s leadership. “All eyes are on INEC to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and fairness,” the statement read, highlighting the importance of the commission’s performance in this election.
Accord Party emphasized that adequate preparation is essential, including ensuring that electoral materials and equipment are ready and functional to avoid logistical challenges. The party called for a neutral and level playing field for all political parties and candidates, noting that a successful election in Anambra could positively influence future elections, including the 2026 Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections and the 2027 general elections.
President Bola Tinubu, at the swearing-in ceremony of Professor Amupitan, described the Anambra governorship election as a “litmus test” for the new INEC leadership. He urged the commission to prioritize transparency, credibility, and peace throughout the electoral process, emphasizing that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system must be beyond reproach.
As the election approaches, the Accord Party, along with other political stakeholders, continues to monitor INEC’s preparations closely. The outcome of the Anambra poll is seen as critical in shaping the future of Nigeria’s democracy and the public’s trust in the electoral process.
