JUST-IN: Dangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price To ₦820 per Litre

JUST-IN: Dangote Refinery Slashes Petrol Price To ₦820 per Litre.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a reduction in the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from ₦850 to ₦820 per litre. Effective from Tuesday, 12 August 2025, this price cut is set to bring relief to millions of Nigerians amid rising economic pressures.

The announcement, made by Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer at Dangote Group, highlights the refinery’s commitment to stabilising Nigeria’s petroleum market. “This reduction reflects our dedication to supporting national development and easing the burden on consumers,” Chiejina said. The price drop is expected to lower retail prices at filling stations, offering respite to motorists and businesses dependent on petrol.

The decision follows fluctuations in global crude oil prices, with Dangote Refinery adjusting its pricing to benefit Nigerian consumers. Industry experts predict that major fuel marketers, including MRS Oil & Gas, Ardova Plc, and Heyden Petroleum, which have supply agreements with Dangote, may reduce pump prices to below ₦885 per litre in some areas.

In addition, Dangote Refinery plans to strengthen its distribution network by deploying 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks starting 15 August 2025. This ₦720 billion initiative aims to improve fuel distribution nationwide while promoting sustainable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The move is projected to save Nigeria approximately ₦1.7 trillion annually by cutting transportation costs for fuel marketers.

Consumers and businesses have welcomed the price reduction, particularly as Nigeria faces inflationary challenges and high transport costs. “This is good news,” said Adeola Adebayo, a Lagos taxi driver. “Cheaper fuel means I can keep my fares reasonable for passengers.” However, some independent marketers have expressed concerns about the refinery’s direct-to-retail model, which could impact smaller players in the sector.

With a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest single-train refinery, continues to transform Nigeria’s energy sector by reducing reliance on imported fuel and ensuring a stable domestic supply. The refinery is positioning Nigeria as a potential hub for refined petroleum products in the region.

As the festive season nears, the refinery has urged marketers to pass on the price reduction to consumers, aligning with the federal government’s economic recovery efforts. This development is expected to provide a timely boost to households and businesses across the country.
