Just In: Du Plessis Overpowers Israel Adesanya To Retain Middleweight UFC Title

Du Plessis Overpowers Adesanya to Retain UFC Middleweight Title.

In a thrilling main event at UFC 305, South African fighter Dricus Du Plessis successfully retained his middleweight championship by submitting Israel Adesanya in the fourth round. The victory came in dramatic fashion, as Du Plessis secured a rear-naked choke to bring an end to a highly anticipated bout that had been fuelled by intense pre-fight exchanges concerning race and identity.

Adesanya, a former two-time champion, entered the octagon with the aim of reclaiming the title he had lost to Sean Strickland last year. Despite initially leading on the scorecards after three rounds, the Nigerian-born fighter could not withstand Du Plessis’ late surge. The South African turned the tide with a series of punishing strikes and a critical takedown, eventually forcing Adesanya to submit.

The fight was aggressive from the outset, with Adesanya landing sharp counters that left Du Plessis with a cut on his forehead. However, as the bout progressed, Du Plessis’ relentless pressure and superior wrestling skills began to wear down his opponent. By the second round, the South African’s wrestling had become a dominant factor, with Adesanya being taken down twice.

The third round was marked by both fighters exchanging heavy blows in an effort to establish control. But it was in the fourth round that Du Plessis’ ground game proved decisive, securing him the victory and solidifying his status as the top middleweight in the UFC.

As Du Plessis celebrates his successful title defence, Adesanya is left to contemplate his future after this disappointing defeat. The bout, charged with tension due to Du Plessis’ controversial comments about being the first “real” African UFC champion, ended with the South African firmly establishing himself at the pinnacle of the division.
