FG Approves 12 New University Courses To Equip Nigerian Students For Global Relevance.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the introduction of 12 new academic courses into the nation’s university curriculum, in a move aimed at aligning higher education with global trends and improving graduates’ employability.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), the regulatory body overseeing university education in the country, is set to roll out these programmes as part of its broader strategy to modernise the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

The newly approved courses include:

– Artificial Intelligence

– Classical Christian Education

– Community Health Science

– Cooperative Economics and Management Studies

– Doctor of Medical Laboratory Science

– Geomatics Engineering

– Intelligence and Security Studies

– Parasitology and Entomology

– Sports Management

– Telecommunication Science

– Water Sanitation and Hygiene

– Islamic Economics and Finance

This development is designed to ensure that Nigerian universities stay competitive in a rapidly evolving global knowledge economy. With the introduction of forward-looking subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Telecommunication Science, and Intelligence and Security Studies, institutions are preparing students for future challenges and career opportunities both locally and internationally.

The final phase of implementation will involve consultations and feedback from key stakeholders in the education sector. Once completed, universities will begin integrating the new courses into their academic offerings.

“The goal is to produce graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the practical skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to society and the workforce,” said an NUC official.

As universities make preparations to begin these programmes, adjustments in teaching methods and learning strategies are expected. Students and academic staff alike are being encouraged to embrace this change, which could open up new paths for innovation, research, and employment.

This bold step underscores Nigeria’s commitment to educational advancement and the creation of a future-ready generation.
