House of Representatives Proposes Establishment Of Bola Tinubu Federal University Of Nigerian Languages.
The Nigerian House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards creating the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages. This bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu alongside eight other lawmakers, had its first reading on Thursday.
The proposed institution aims to promote the study of Nigerian languages and cultural development, offering various academic programmes, including diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate qualifications. The university’s goal is to produce graduates proficient in Nigerian languages who can contribute to national development through linguistic and cultural expertise.
In addition to teaching, the university would prioritise research, innovation, and postgraduate training. It would also collaborate with other institutions focused on language and cultural studies, enhancing in-service training and extending educational outreach.
Notably, the bill specifies that President Bola Tinubu would be the university’s visitor, responsible for overseeing evaluations every five years. The President would also have the authority to remove council members, except the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor, if found guilty of misconduct.
The bill is now scheduled for a second reading, during which stakeholders’ input will be gathered through a public hearing, marking an important milestone for the future of Nigerian language and cultural education.
