Dr Uma Ukpai was the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Born in Ohafia, Abia State, he spent most of his life in Uyo, where he hosted a weekly Wednesday fellowship that attracted thousands of worshippers.
Earlier this year, the celebrated preacher marked his 80th birthday, where followers and admirers gifted him ₦80 million in honour of his service to the Christian faith. During the celebration, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, described him as “God’s gift to Akwa Ibom State,” while the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, praised his unwavering faith and dedication to evangelism.
Pastor Adeboye also recounted how Dr Ukpai offered him encouragement during one of the darkest moments of his life, describing the late evangelist as “a man of great faith and compassion.” He added, “If I follow the footsteps of a great man like that, when I grow older, I’ll want to be like Uma Ukpai.”
