JUST-IN: No Impeachment Plans For Akpabio, Senate Says

Senate Leadership Calls Reports ‘Misleading’ and Urges Calm Among Lawmakers

In a move to quash circulating speculation, the Nigerian Senate has formally denied that any impeachment process is underway against its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

Denial From The Senate Leadership

During plenary proceedings on Wednesday, the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, stated unequivocally that no discussion or formal plan exists within the Senate to remove Senator Akpabio from his role. He described the reports as “misleading” and “intended to create confusion” in the National Assembly.
He further remarked:

“There was no attempt by any of our colleagues, nor any discussion about removing the Senate President from office. We are fully united … Reports like these are clearly meant to create confusion.”

What Sparked The Rumours

The narrative appears to have originated from comments attributed to former Senate official Orji Uzor Kalu (Senator for Abia North), who referenced prior “unsuccessful attempts” to remove the Senate President.

However, the Senate leadership says Kalu’s remarks were taken out of context—he did not affirm any ongoing plot but rather pointed to past tensions.

Why This Matters

  • Institutional Stability: The Senate’s leadership emphasises that internal discord or the perception of a leadership crisis undermines the chamber’s ability to focus on legislative work and national priorities. Bamidele stressed the body’s “zero‑tolerance approach to distractions”.

  • Public Perception: In an era where rumours, social media narratives and “fake news” can spread quickly, the Senate’s swift public denial suggests a concern about being seen as divided or unstable.

  • Political Context: Senator Akpabio remains a key figure in Nigeria’s legislative landscape, so any credible move against him would carry significant political implications. By denying such a move now, the Senate seeks to nip uncertainty in the bud.

What The Public Should Note

  • There has been no formal notice, proposal, or motion before the Senate concerning the impeachment or removal of Senator Akpabio.

  • Any future development of that nature would presumably require adherence to the Senate’s rules and likely substantial backing from within the chamber.

  • Observers and media should treat claims of internal plots with caution and seek independent confirmation rather than relying solely on verbal attributions or unnamed sources.

Looking Ahead

While the Senate has dismissed the impeachment talk for now, this episode is a reminder of how quickly political narratives can form—and the importance for legislators to manage optics as well as governance.

It will be important to watch whether any faction within the legislature speaks further on this, or whether new rumours emerge. Additionally, this could serve as a catalyst for the Senate leadership to step up internal communications to prevent misinterpretations.
