President Tinubu Convenes Emergency Meeting Amid Rivers State Crisis.
President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over an emergency meeting with key National Assembly leaders and top security chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following rising political tensions in Rivers State.
The meeting comes as concerns grow over the standoff between factions loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Lawmakers aligned with Wike are reportedly pushing for Fubara’s impeachment, adding to the political instability in the oil-rich state.
Although the official agenda has not been disclosed, it is widely believed that discussions will focus on the unfolding crisis. In attendance at the high-level meeting are Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. Also present are National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) Adeola Ajayi, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Mohammed Mohammed.
The emergency discussions follow another concerning development in Rivers State—a pipeline explosion on the Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo Community, Gokana Local Government Area. The blast, which occurred late Monday near the Bodo-Bonny Road, has raised further security and stability concerns in the region.
As the meeting continues, there is hope that the federal government will take decisive steps to address the political and security challenges in Rivers State.
