Aloy Ejimakor, legal consultant to Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has alleged that the Nigerian system has been working against his client since 2021.
His comments came in the wake of the recent court ruling that sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment.
Ejimakor made the claims during an interview on Monday, explaining that the legal and political framework seemed aligned against Kanu from the very beginning. He said the authorities were intent on undermining Kanu’s activities and influence.
“First of all I have to make it clear that it appeared from 2021 that the deck was stacked against Nnamdi Kanu; the entire system seemed to be against him and against what he was doing,” Ejimakor said, emphasizing the systemic bias against the IPOB leader.
He pointed to the June 2021 rendition of Kanu as a clear example of the system’s desperation. Ejimakor said the abduction violated international law as well as Nigerian and Kenyan legal provisions, highlighting the extreme measures taken against his client.
Discussing the November 20 ruling, Ejimakor said the outcome, while surprising to the public, was anticipated by those closely following the case. He described the legal battle as exceptionally challenging due to the entrenched opposition Kanu faced.
Ejimakor concluded that the sentencing demonstrates the system’s determination to act against Kanu by any means available, reinforcing his belief that the IPOB leader has been unfairly targeted since 2021.
