Koeman Criticises Bergwijn’s Saudi Move, But Depay Still In National Team Plans.
Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has voiced his disapproval of Steven Bergwijn’s recent move to the Saudi Pro League, stating that the winger will no longer be considered for selection in the national team. However, Koeman has taken a different stance on Memphis Depay, whose move to Brazil will not close the door on his international career.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Koeman expressed concerns over Bergwijn’s decision to join the growing number of players making the switch to Saudi Arabia. “I disapproved of Steven Bergwijn’s move to Saudi,” Koeman remarked, implying that the level of competition in the Saudi Pro League does not meet the standards required for the national team.
In contrast, Koeman offered a more measured response regarding Depay’s recent transfer to Brazil. “With Memphis, it can be different,” Koeman explained. “The level of the league in Brazil is different, so yes, he can still be part of the national team, but it depends on his fitness and if he reaches his level.”
Koeman’s comments highlight his desire to maintain a high standard within the Dutch national team, while also acknowledging the varying levels of competition across different leagues. Despite Bergwijn’s exclusion, Depay remains in contention for future call-ups, provided he stays fit and performs to expectations.
