The Kwara State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime and illicit drug trafficking.
Operatives intercepted a vehicle loaded with tubers of yams, under which 127 bags of substances suspected to be cannabis were concealed.
The joint operation was carried out along the Babanla Orekeke Oke Ode axis in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state. The police worked in collaboration with the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigeria Forest Security Service, and local vigilante groups.
Two male suspects, Dan Teni Haruna and Rabiu Ibrahim, both from Saliku, Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, were arrested in connection with the cannabis smuggling. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire Adeyemi, the suspects would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, commended the team for their effective collaboration and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining security across the state. “Kwara will not be a safe haven for criminal elements,” he warned, stressing that the state will not tolerate illicit drug trafficking and other vices.
In a related development, the operatives also apprehended three suspects – Mohammed Abubakar and Hussain, both from Tsaragi, and Tukur Ibrahim, a notorious kidnapper linked to the violent invasion of Babanla on August 8, 2025. These suspects will also face prosecution after investigations are completed.
The police command urged members of the public to report suspicious movements through established security channels, as they continue to sustain joint operations to prevent further infiltration of drugs and criminal gangs into the state.
The operation is a testament to the police command’s determination to keep Kwara safe and secure. As the investigation continues, the command expects to uncover more details about the suspects and their networks.
