Labour Party Fires At NLC President To Resign And Contest Party Chairmanship

In a bold move that underscores growing tensions between political and labour spheres, the Labour Party has demanded the resignation of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, urging him to vie for the chairmanship position within the party.

The call comes in response to a letter penned by the NLC Political Commission, advocating for the suspension of the impending convention of the Labour Party scheduled to take place in Umuahia, Abia State.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party remained resolute in proceeding with its planned convention, citing adherence to the party’s constitution, which delineates eligible participants.

The Labour Party lambasted what it deemed to be the disruptive conduct of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, asserting that his actions have undermined the party’s prior achievements.

Expressing concern over what it perceives as undue meddling in its internal affairs, the Labour Party emphasised the autonomy it maintains distinct from the NLC.

The statement highlighted a history of discord between the NLC and the Labour Party, recounting previous clashes and alleging interference in candidate selections for elections.

Furthermore, the Labour Party refuted claims of non-compliance with court judgements, asserting adherence to agreements made with the NLC.

Addressing the recent turmoil within the party, the statement questioned the motives behind the NLC’s intervention and urged Ajaero to resign from his position within the labour union to contest the party’s chairmanship.

Additionally, the Labour Party accused the NLC of lacking solidarity and failing to adequately champion workers’ rights, while also dismissing allegations of financial impropriety.

In response to the NLC’s press release, the Labour Party expressed disappointment and dismissed claims of leadership incompetence, emphasising the constitutional procedures for leadership change within the party.

Amidst the escalating feud, the Labour Party underscored its commitment to proceeding with its convention and urged the NLC to focus on its core mandate of advocating for workers’ welfare.

The statement concluded with a call for unity among labour and political entities to address societal challenges, emphasising the need for collaboration rather than internal strife.

As tensions continue to simmer between the Labour Party and the NLC, the political landscape braces for potential ramifications stemming from this rift.
