Lagos Government Begins Demolition Of Illegal Shops Under High-Tension Cables At Adamo Market Ikorodu.
The Lagos State Government has begun the demolition of illegal shops constructed directly beneath high-tension power lines at Adamo Market in Ikorodu, in a move aimed at safeguarding public safety and upholding environmental laws.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. He explained that the action aligns with the state’s ongoing commitment to enforcing the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
According to the commissioner, the illegal structures pose significant risks to human life and critical infrastructure due to their proximity to high-voltage power lines.
“Due to the scale of infractions discovered during our inspection, we have ordered the immediate closure of the market until further notice,” Wahab said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“Our goal is not just enforcement, but the protection of all residents. We urge market leaders and traders across Lagos to avoid illegal constructions and respect environmental guidelines. Safety and sustainability remain non-negotiable.”
The government’s swift response is part of a broader strategy to prevent potential disasters and ensure urban planning standards are strictly adhered to across the state.
The demolition exercise at Adamo Market follows a series of warnings by the state government urging compliance with environmental and safety regulations in commercial and residential areas.
