Lagos Police Debunk Claims Of Boko Haram Arrests, Urge Public To Remain Calm

Lagos Police Debunk Claims Of Boko Haram Arrests, Urge Public To Remain Calm.

The Lagos State Police Command has firmly refuted recent media reports alleging that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects were apprehended within the state.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the reports — published on 17 April 2025 in some newspapers — as false, malicious, and aimed at inciting public fear.

Acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, the command launched an immediate investigation to verify the claims.

“The outcome of the investigation reveals that there is nowhere throughout Lagos State that the group mentioned in the report – Boko Haram – were seen, sighted, or arrested,” Hundeyin stated.

He further explained that leaders and operators within the trailer park communities mentioned in the report denied any knowledge or sighting of suspected insurgents. Surveillance operatives and officers from the Lagos State Police Intelligence Department were deployed to the areas to carry out thorough verification.

“No one confirmed the presence or arrest of such group members as reported in the write-up throughout Lagos State,” he reiterated.

The command condemned the publication, warning that it was an ill-intentioned attempt to stir unnecessary panic among residents. “The report in its entirety is false, malicious, and ill-intended to cause fear and apprehension in the minds of the public,” Hundeyin added.

He urged Lagosians to disregard the story, which he described as a fabrication and “a figment of the imagination of the writer.” He also called on the media to uphold ethical journalism by verifying facts before publication.

“The writer of the story is advised to verify facts and truth of any information before going to the press,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police has encouraged residents to go about their daily activities without fear, assuring them of the police’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.

Members of the public were also encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or contact the police control room on 08063299264.
