Lagos Police Nab Suspect In Viral Assault And Theft Case.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Friday Onu, a man caught on camera assaulting Mrs Yetunde Amole along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The arrest follows the circulation of a viral video showing Onu attacking the female commercial driver in a brazen attempt to steal her car battery.

The incident, which occurred near the Oriental Hotel on Monday, sparked outrage after footage surfaced online, depicting Onu’s violent confrontation with Mrs Amole. According to reports, the suspect was interrupted mid-theft by the driver, who courageously intervened. Infuriated by her resistance, Onu assaulted her before officers from the Maroko Division intervened, apprehending him shortly after the altercation.

CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Wednesday, 9 April 2025. “The Lagos State Police Command is aware of a viral video circulating on social media, depicting the assault of one Yetunde Amole by a suspected thug near the Oriental Hotel area in Lagos,” Hundeyin said. “Following a prompt response by officers of the Maroko Division, Friday Onu was arrested shortly after the incident and detained.”

The police revealed that preparations for Onu’s arraignment were underway when he suddenly fell ill. He has since been transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he remains under medical supervision. Authorities have assured the public that he will face justice as soon as he is deemed fit to stand trial. “The suspect will be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as police medical professionals declare him fit,” Hundeyin added.

The Lagos State Police Command has praised Mrs Amole for her bravery in confronting the suspect, reiterating their commitment to ensuring the safety of all residents. “We commend Ms Amole for her courage and assure her, and all victims of crime, that their cases will be thoroughly pursued to ensure justice is served,” the statement read.

The arrest has been met with approval from the public, with many taking to social media to commend the police for their quick action. The incident has also reignited discussions about security along the busy Lekki-Epe corridor, a known hotspot for petty crime.

As investigations continue, the police have urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement to maintain safety across the state. For Mrs Amole and the Lagos community, this arrest marks a step towards accountability and a reminder of the resilience of its people in the face of adversity.
