Residents of Lagos have expressed concerns over the increasing cost of condoms in the country, fearing it could lead to a surge in unsafe sex practices and unintended pregnancies, according to a report by NAN.
Various brands of condoms, known for their quality, durability, comfort, and protection, are popular among Nigerians, including Durex, Fiesta, Kiss, Rough Rider, and Gold Circle.
However, recent checks at pharmacies in Lagos revealed price hikes ranging from 50 to 200 percent compared to rates in 2023.
Felix Atuche, a banker, highlighted the financial strain caused by the rising prices, leading some individuals to consider alternative methods of contraception. Atuche mentioned resorting to the withdrawal method but acknowledged concerns about its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.
Monisola Ajayi, a businesswoman, emphasised the importance of prioritising sexual health and revealed her preference for female condoms due to her past experiences with sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Meanwhile, Celestine Adesola, a youth corps member, expressed worries about the impact of expensive condoms on youths, particularly during events like Valentine’s Day, where risky behaviours may escalate.
Commenting on the situation, pharmacist Michael Achoji attributed the price hikes to rising inflation, increased production costs, and fluctuations in the foreign exchange rate.
The rising cost of condoms poses challenges for individuals seeking to protect themselves against STIs and unintended pregnancies, raising concerns about the accessibility of affordable contraceptives in Lagos and beyond.
