The Lagos State Government has announced plans to begin a regulated paid parking system across the state by 2026 to reduce traffic congestion and stop disorderly parking practices.
The initiative, according to officials, is aimed at improving road efficiency and restoring order to Lagos roads.
The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) will manage the new system, which will first take effect in busy areas such as Ikoyi, Ikeja, Victoria Island, and parts of Lekki before being expanded to other zones.
Under the arrangement, parking rates will be clearly displayed at designated areas, while motorists will make payments electronically through cashless platforms. A “pay-by-plate” system will also be introduced, allowing drivers to pay based on their vehicle registration numbers for easier tracking and regulation.
To prevent long-term occupation of public parking spaces, the government will introduce a three-hour parking limit in certain locations. This move is expected to discourage motorists from monopolising public spaces and promote fair use of parking spots.
The General Manager of LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, explained that the project is not primarily about generating revenue but about instilling order and promoting behavioural change among motorists. She said, “We want to build a culture of responsible parking in Lagos and ensure that public spaces are properly managed for everyone’s benefit.”
Officials added that public awareness campaigns will begin soon, along with the installation of signs and digital systems to guide residents ahead of the 2026 rollout.
