The Lagos State Government has issued a stern two-week ultimatum for the removal of illegal building extensions across the state.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, announced the enforcement during a press conference held in Alausa on Wednesday.
Expressing concern over the growing trend of unlawfully converted residential spaces and unauthorized building attachments, Dr. Olumide emphasized the need for immediate action to uphold sanity in the state.
The Commissioner pinpointed commercial centers such as Lagos Island, Ikeja, and Iyana-Ipaja as hotspots for these illicit practices, where shops have been extended with sheds and steel external stairways in violation of regulations. Owners of structures with illegal extensions are now under a strict two-week deadline to remove them.
Failing compliance within the stipulated timeframe, the State Government is poised to commence a statewide demolition of such structures, commencing precisely on 15th February, starting from Lagos Island.
In addition to the crackdown on building extensions, the Commissioner also addressed the issue of structures encroaching on the Right of Way of powerlines, canals, and pipelines. Property owners responsible for such constructions are urged to prepare for massive enforcement within the same two-week period.
