Lagos State Government Closes Dowen College Over Waste Disposal Violations

Lagos State Government Closes Dowen College Over Waste Disposal Violations.

Dowen College in Lekki Phase 1 has been sealed by the Lagos State Government due to improper waste disposal practices, as announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on 13 August 2025. The closure follows the discovery of waste materials linked to the school being disposed of in violation of environmental regulations.

The enforcement action was prompted by a viral video showing a man, reportedly associated with Dowen College, admitting to flouting waste management rules. Operatives from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, in collaboration with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, traced the offence to the school, leading to its immediate sealing. Wahab emphasised that such disregard for environmental laws is unacceptable, stating, “We will not hesitate to take firm action against any institution that violates our waste management regulations.”

This move is part of a broader initiative by the Lagos State Government to enforce environmental compliance, with the state’s Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 serving as the legal framework. The closure of Dowen College follows similar actions against 13 markets across the state earlier this year for persistent illegal waste disposal, reflecting the government’s zero-tolerance policy.

Wahab stressed the importance of maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment for all residents, with ongoing efforts to ensure compliance across institutions and businesses. The Lagos State Government has urged stakeholders, including schools and market leaders, to adopt responsible waste management practices to prevent further sanctions.

The sealing of Dowen College serves as a reminder of the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability, with authorities vowing to continue rigorous enforcement to uphold public health and order.
