Lagos State Government Schedules Night Repairs For Maryland Independence Bridge.
The Lagos State Government has announced a four-day partial closure of the Maryland Independence Bridge to facilitate essential repairs. The maintenance work, targeting a damaged section of the bridge’s wall and expansion joints, is set to take place from Saturday, 16 August, to Tuesday, 19 August 2025, between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. daily, as confirmed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.
To minimise disruption, the repairs will occur during late-night hours when traffic is lighter. Motorists travelling inbound to Oshodi, Ojuelegba, Stadium, or Lagos Island will be diverted at Maria Lodge in Maryland, onto the Maryland Bridge, to connect to Idiroko towards Anthony to continue their journeys. The main carriageway will be closed to vehicular traffic during these hours. However, those heading inbound to Ketu or Ikorodu from Lagos, Stadium, or Anthony will experience unhindered movement, as this route remains unaffected.
Osiyemi assured residents that traffic management personnel will be deployed to guide motorists, maintain order, and reduce congestion during the repair period. He urged drivers to comply with officers’ directives to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimise inconvenience. “This partial closure is a vital part of our plan to rehabilitate and replace the expansion joints of the Maryland Independence Bridge, ensuring its safety and structural integrity,” Osiyemi stated.
The announcement has been widely shared across platforms, with posts on X reflecting public awareness of the planned works. The Lagos State Government has appealed for patience and cooperation from road users, emphasising that these repairs are crucial for maintaining the bridge’s safety and longevity. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes during the specified hours to avoid delays.
