The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence enforcement action aimed at dismantling over 100 shanties located beneath the Adeniji Adele bridge, beginning tomorrow.
This decision follows the expiration of a 48-hour removal notice served to the occupants.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, revealed that the operation will be carried out by operatives of the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI/LAGESC) and officials from the Monitoring, Enforcement, and Compliance (MEC) department of the ministry, with adequate security backup.
Wahab emphasised that the initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to reclaim ungoverned spaces within the metropolis. He highlighted the unsightly nature of the shanties, which he believes present a distorted image of Lagos as a smart city and serve as potential hideouts for criminals.
The impending enforcement action underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining orderliness and security in Lagos State, as it seeks to enhance the city’s aesthetics and curb criminal activities associated with such informal settlements.
