Lagos Trade Fair Demolition Draws Criticism from Peter Obi

The demolition of the Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) Market at the Lagos Trade Fair complex has sparked widespread outrage.

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has condemned the action, describing it as a test of impunity, justice, and compassion. Obi visited the demolished site alongside Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, and other lawmakers to express solidarity with affected traders.

The demolition has left thousands of traders devastated, with many uncertain about recovering their investments. Obi emphasized that destroying legitimate investments without due process is unjust and economically destructive. “To destroy such legitimate investments without due process is not only unjust but also economically destructive,” he stated. The traders claim that their buildings were duly approved by the Federal Government through the Trade Fair Management Board.

Obi commended the traders for their remarkable restraint and calm in the face of painful loss. “I must commend the traders for their remarkable restraint and calm in the face of such painful loss,” he said, appreciating the traders’ composure in the face of adversity. He urged the government to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring to light the circumstances that led to the demolition.

“A society that seeks to make progress must protect enterprise, encourage productivity, and defend the dignity of its citizens,” Obi emphasized. The Lagos State Government defends its action as necessary to enforce physical planning laws and remove illegal structures. However, Obi’s intervention has drawn fresh attention to the matter, amid mounting calls for urgent government action to redress the situation.

Obi commended lawmakers who pledged to investigate the incident, ensuring that such demolitions do not occur in the future. “I equally appreciate the Senators and the House of Representatives members who have pledged to investigate this matter thoroughly and bring to light the circumstances that led to this unfortunate development,” he said. With this development, there is hope that the traders will receive justice and compensation for their losses.

Obi concluded by reiterating his vision for a new Nigeria, emphasizing that justice and accountability are central to national development. “A new Nigeria is possible,” he said, expressing optimism about the country’s future. The ASPAMDA Market demolition serves as a test case for the government’s commitment to justice, compassion, and fairness.
