The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has apprehended a Togolese driver involved in a high-speed crash that left a pedestrian critically injured at the Adeniji Adele intersection on Lagos Island.

The incident occurred on Monday, September 29, 2025, when the driver of a Mazda vehicle with registration number EPE 749 GS was reportedly driving at an unlawful speed.

According to LASTMA, the motorist lost control and struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the road, resulting in severe injuries and extensive bleeding. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver attempted to flee the scene, but was swiftly pursued and apprehended by LASTMA officials. “The pedestrian was rushed to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service,” LASTMA said.

The pedestrian is currently receiving emergency treatment at the hospital. LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, reiterated the agency’s commitment to road safety and the protection of lives on Lagos roads. He condemned the reckless behavior that led to the accident and warned motorists against speeding.

LASTMA’s swift action led to the apprehension of the fleeing driver, who has been handed over to the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution. The agency’s efforts to maintain road safety and prevent accidents are ongoing.

The incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for motorists to adhere to speed limits. LASTMA continues to work towards ensuring the safety of all road users in Lagos.

The agency’s commitment to road safety is evident in its prompt response to incidents and its efforts to educate motorists on safe driving practices. As Mr. Bakare-Oki noted, LASTMA will continue to take measures to prevent accidents and protect lives on Lagos roads.

The driver faces potential prosecution for reckless driving and other related offenses.
