Lille Stun Real Madrid In Champions League Upset

Lille Stun Real Madrid In Champions League, As Los Blancos 36 Game Unbeaten Run Came To An End.

Holders Real Madrid suffered their first Champions League defeat since May 2023, as a resilient Lille side claimed a 1-0 victory at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium. This loss also marked Real’s first setback in 36 matches across all competitions, the last being a Copa del Rey defeat to Atletico Madrid on 18 January.

Jonathan David netted the decisive goal for Lille from the penalty spot, following a VAR decision that ruled Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick with his arm. The Ligue 1 side’s performance was superb throughout, thoroughly deserving the three points after a disappointing 2-0 loss to Sporting in their opening game.

Before his successful penalty, Canada international David was denied by Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who made a stunning double save as Lille applied relentless pressure. Manager Bruno Genesio’s team dominated much of the match, leaving the Spanish giants struggling to find their rhythm.

Real Madrid’s young Brazilian forward Endrick, who became the club’s youngest player to start a Champions League match at 18 years and 73 days, found it difficult to influence proceedings. Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham, one of Real’s key midfielders, also had an uncharacteristically quiet game.

Despite Lille’s dominance, Real Madrid launched a late surge when Kylian Mbappe, returning from injury, was introduced just before the hour mark. Antonio Rudiger saw his header cleared off the line, and Arda Güler squandered a late chance, heading straight at Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

The defeat leaves Real Madrid with work to do in their upcoming match against Borussia Dortmund, a repeat of last season’s final. Lille, buoyed by this famous victory, will travel to Atletico Madrid as they look to build on this momentum in their Champions League campaign.
