Lionel Messi has stated that age will not be a determining factor in his retirement plans, emphasizing that his performance and enjoyment of the game will dictate when he hangs up his boots.
In an interview with the Big Time podcast, Messi expressed his self-critical nature, noting that he will retire when he feels he is no longer contributing positively to his team.
“I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer performing, that I am no longer enjoying it or helping my teammates (I will retire),” Messi said. “I am very self-critical. I know when I am doing well, when I am not, when I play well and when I play poorly. When I feel it’s time to take that step, I will do it without thinking about age.”
Despite nearing 37 years old, Messi remains focused on competing at the highest level as long as he feels physically and mentally capable.
When asked about his future plans beyond playing, Messi mentioned that he hasn’t given it much thought yet, preferring to live in the present and enjoy each moment.
“I haven’t thought about it yet. For now, I try to enjoy each day, each moment, without thinking about the future. I don’t have anything clear yet,” Messi said.
“I hope to keep playing for a while longer, because that’s what I enjoy. When the time comes, I will surely find the path to what fulfils me and what I like, and a new role.”
Messi’s commitment to playing and his willingness to adapt to new roles in the future reflect his deep passion for the game and his desire to continue contributing positively to football even beyond his playing days.
